Asahi Industries Corporate Brochure

Some clients believe that Japanese-English translations should be done by native English speakers, which minimizes the costs of editing. My own view is that the best J-E translations are done by a two-person team. You need a native Japanese to do the initial translation, and a native English speaker to "polish" the raw translation for Western readers. I've edited hundreds of translations done by native English speakers, including numerous corporate brochures.

Basing Growth on Technology (1985)
Advances in technology are again affecting worldwide industrial structure. Determined R&D efforts are under way in most industries to harness those advances usefully. Biotechnology, in particular, will change agriculture and related industries.
For over fifty years in its Agra industry and material manufacturing operations, Asahi Industries has been accumulating technological and human resources. The merger of the two food processing operations in the new company will permit better coordination of basic and downstream technologies in the production and processing of foods.
Market oriented R&D at Asahi Industries aims at a healthier society in harmony with nature. R&D activities are conducted in the laboratories of each of our three divisions and our affiliates, supervised and coordinated by our Advanced Technology Development Committee.
The Foods Laboratory focuses on developing and improving fresh and processed daily foods and seasonings. We emphasize here the use of vegetable proteins and the development of new products through biotechnological processes and microbes.
The company also concentrates resources on the Biological Engineering Laboratory, in which more than twenty researchers with Ph.D. or M.S. degrees are currently working. Primarily oriented around agriculture, the major research topics here include:
- Improvement, through microbes, of soils which have deteriorated under repeated cultivation;
- Improvement of plant breeds to make them resistant to climate and disease by using plant molecular biology techniques; and
- Development of organic fertilizers from fish scum with microbes. Research activities of this laboratory help the Biotechnology Committee of the Seibu Saison Group formulate strategies.
The Industrial Engineering Laboratory, reorganized, in 1985, carries out R&D related to new materials and mechanical processes. Here we especially aim to develop new materials incorporating fine ceramics.
AC Co., Ltd., formerly known as the Environmental Analysis Center, assesses environmental and sanitary conditions, and tests and measures products and processes. Information and experience, amassed from such operations throughout Japan, are subsequently utilized in the laboratories of EAC to develop new sanitary and control systems.
Technology development is not limited to laboratory work. In 1985 alone, staff circles throughout the company voluntarily submitted over 500 proposals related to improving products and processes. Such actions reflect the active involvement of all our staff and management in R&D and total quality control, both of which are vital for the company's continued growth in the future.
